Nagas or serpents slip under the earth and slither on top. This close association with the earth makes them the perfect representatives of the earth’s fertility, to be worshipped for a bountiful harvest and for children. Just as the earth renews its fertility each year, the Naga sheds its old skin and replaces it with a new one at regular intervals. The image of Krishna dancing on Kaliya’s hood indicates Krishna’s domestication of the earth’s fertility for the benefit of his devotees.

Culture needs to thrive but not at the cost of nature. Dharma must not only domesticate nature, it also needs to ensure there is harmony between nature and culture. The following narrative describes the end of one society and the rise of another. The earlier king,Vena, is unable to maintain the delicate balance. His son, Prithu, strives hard to do so.
